<image:title>Occupational Therapy - We understand how hard it is to see your child struggle.</image:title>
<image:caption>Or even how hard it is to find the right resources when you suspect your child might be falling behind due to a bigger reason like autism or ADHD. Our approach to occupational therapy looks at the entire child and finds ways to support their progress using play, sensory exploration, and the latest in therapy strategies. You’ll find our clinic provides a safe and supportive environment for children to learn new skills. Between our caregiver support and uplifting sessions, both you and your child will walk out of each session with increased confidence for the days and weeks ahead.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Occupational Therapy - DIR Floortime</image:title>
<image:caption>DIR Floortime is a treatment model that focuses on engagement and following the child's lead while challenging them to go to the next level. It is fun, engaging, and creates positive interactions that flow back and forth between child and therapist (or caregiver). You’ll love watching your child’s increased positive interactions during our sessions and using this model yourself.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Occupational Therapy - Sensory Integration</image:title>
<image:caption>This approach looks at how the brain and nervous system understand and respond to information from the senses (touch, hearing, vision, balance, taste, smell, and even the senses inside your body hunger). Sensory processing challenges are the underlying problem behind a wide range of struggles related to big emotions, learning, behavior, play, and movement. At Sensory Kids Iowa, we combine our in-depth knowledge of sensory processing and sensory enriched environments to identify and address sensory challenges that are impacting your child’s daily life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When it comes to cutting-edge treatments that are fun and effective, we love being able to offer the Interactive Metronome. It looks like a fun activity to match rhythmic beats to exercises on a computer screen. But this is actually an amazing brain exercise to address a variety of skills including: Focus Attention Coordination Impulse control Academic performance It’s a favorite around here because it’s so effective at targeting the underlying neurological skills for those with ADD/ADHD, Apraxia/Dyspraxia, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Auditory Processing Disorder, Dyslexia and other reading, learning, or communication disorders.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Occupational Therapy - Interoception Awareness Program</image:title>
<image:caption>Using our training in interoception, we help children understand the senses from inside their bodies. This includes understanding signals such as hunger, fullness, thirst, anxiety, or the need to use the bathroom. Our program has successfully helped children who have autism or sensory processing disorder toilet train through increasing their body awareness with emotions.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Occupational Therapy - Sensory Regulation</image:title>
<image:caption>Did you know that many kids labeled with “behavior problems” actually struggle with regulation issues? We believe everything can change when you start really understanding self-regulation with your child. At Sensory Kids Iowa, we problem-solve with parents to improve your child’s ability to manage big emotions or impulsive actions. Using programs like the “Zone of Regulation” and “How Does Your Engine Run,” we partner with parents to work on sensory issues, emotion recognition and response, and finding compassionate, actionable steps to take when meltdowns happen.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Occupational Therapy - Fine Motor Skills</image:title>
<image:caption>If your child is having difficulty writing, cutting, or fastening buttons or zippers, fine motor skills might be the cause. In a nutshell, fine motor skills are the small, controlled movements of the hand that make a big difference in daily life in terms of academic performance and self-confidence. When it comes to fine motor skills, we get superior results for kids by taking a whole-person perspective that incorporates sensory, strength, visual activities, and coordination practice.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Occupational Therapy - Social Skills</image:title>
<image:caption>We help you take the mystery out of teaching your child those important social skills. An out-of-sync sensory system can make it hard for children with autism, ADHD, anxiety, or sensory processing disorder to engage and interact with family or peers. By addressing sensory challenges and providing fun and supportive ways to practice, we help your child feel more confident and ready to connect with family and peers. <image:title>FAQ - What do I need to do before my first visit at Sensory Kids Iowa?</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Intake Paperwork The time we spend with your child during their appointment is just a snapshot compared to the rest of their life. You help us get a broader picture by filling out our intake paperwork before your initial appointment. By providing this information ahead of time, you’re helping us prepare for a successful first visit. You can either fill out the intake forms online or pick up physical copies from our location in North Liberty. 2. Gather up examples If applicable, gather up some examples of your child’s handwriting or drawing to bring to the first visit. If your child has difficulty with eating, your therapist might reach out before the evaluation with a request for you to bring specific food items so we can observe how your child eats different textures. Bring notes or jot down examples of concerns your child’s teacher may have mentioned. 3. Dress for success Please dress your child in comfortable clothing so they can move and jump around easily, maybe even get a little messy.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - What to expect during the first visit?</image:title>
<image:caption>During your first visit, we complete your child’s initial evaluation. Plan on about 60 minutes for your initial evaluation. During this time, we get to the heart of any issues and form a partnership with you to figure out how to make things better. To help you prepare, here is what to expect: 1. Discussion with parents Understanding your child’s background and development helps us figure out how to help your child. This is the time to share any and all concerns you have for your child. Ahead of time: think of your top priorities for therapy so we can narrow in on your top 5 areas of concern to address during therapy. Building on the information provided in the intake questionnaire, the therapist might also ask follow-up questions about specific developmental skills or daily life. We’ll cover a range of topics including eating habits, communication, language development, social skills, daily routines, emotional responses, and sensory preferences 2. Observe your child After talking with you, it’s time for the therapist to work with your child. If any additional forms need to be completed, you can work on those during this time. The first visit is a combination of building a relationship with your child and observing their skills. Whether in the sensory gym or a quiet, private room, the therapist will observe and suggest different activities to understand your child’s sensory system, motor skills, communication, and ability to follow directions. 3. Overview of Recommendations At the end of the first session, your therapist will discuss the preliminary findings and recommendations for ongoing therapy. The therapist may recommend continuing the assessment using standardized evaluations, observing your child in their school environment, or asking for additional questionnaires to be filled out. The full evaluation reports will follow with a detailed analysis of findings as well as the goals we create together to “gently” challenge your child.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - What to expect during treatment sessions?</image:title>
<image:caption>Every session is different based on current goals, your feedback, and even your child’s mood on a given day. Fortunately, we have the equipment and training to provide a combination of services to best meet your child’s needs. No matter what we do in our treatment sessions, we encourage parents to be actively involved. That being said, this is a safe place no matter what you need. If you’re having a tough day and just need a break, feel free to check in with the therapist and take some time for yourself. Please return at least 5 minutes before your child’s session ends to allow time for the therapist’s feedback. Generally, a session lasts 30 minutes for ST and 60 minutes for OT. Just like the initial evaluation, plan to dress your child in comfortable clothes that can get messy and allow for movement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>FAQ - What insurance do you accept?</image:title>
<image:caption>We are only in-network with BlueCross BlueShield. This includes BCBS plans from the University of Iowa and local school districts, as well as out of state BCBS plans. Please bring your insurance card for us to make a copy. Other than that, families can choose to pay privately for our services. Download our prompt pay rates here. Simply ask about our payment plans if you’re concerned about the cost of treatment. We’re also able to provide a superbill receipt in case you’re looking to self-submit to an out-of-network insurance.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - What is sensory integration and who does it help?</image:title>
<image:caption>Sensory integration refers to how the body and brain work together to understand and respond to information from the senses outside the body (sight, sound, taste, smell, body position) and inside the body (hunger, thirst, anxiety, and urge to use the bathroom). A sensory system that’s not processing information easily can show up in daily life as meltdowns, avoiding certain clothing or foods, repetitive activities, or classroom disruptions. What’s interesting is that sensory processing challenges overlap with another childhood diagnosis such as autism, ADHD, or anxiety. As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, addressing the body’s ability to integrate sensory information can improve a lot of frustrating pieces of daily life for a child with or without a formal diagnosis.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - What does it mean to be SIPT certified?</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re proud to have a SIPT certified therapist on staff at Sensory Kids Iowa! Being SIPT or SI certified indicates that a therapist has completed advanced training in sensory integration. This is the highest level of certification that is offered in regards to evaluation and treating sensory processing challenges. This means we’re equipped with specialized sensory integration knowledge to offer options for kids in Eastern Iowa with behavior disorders, attention deficits, autism spectrum disorders, and developmental delays.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - Do I need a physician referral to start therapy at Sensory Kids Iowa?</image:title>
<image:caption>This depends on how you plan to pay for therapy services. We’re a private fee-based clinic so we don’t require a physician’s order to begin therapy if you’re going to pay for therapy out-of-pocket. However, keep in mind, a physician’s referral IS REQUIRED by insurance to get reimbursement for your child’s therapy services. So if you plan to submit to insurance, you’ll need a doctor’s order faxed to our clinic. This applies to both BlueCross BlueShield or any other insurance you plan to self-submit to using a ‘superbill’ receipt. You can download the doctor’s referral form here.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - Is it possible for a Sensory Kids therapist to come into my home or school?</image:title>
<image:caption>Yes! We are dedicated to doing what it takes to help your child, even if that means going outside the walls of our clinic. When needed, we’re able to go to your home or school to provide a consultation or session within that context. Sometimes being able to see your child in that specific situation really helps us provide more personalized and situation-specific support. Please check with your child’s school to see if they allow outside consultants. *Please note: off-site visits are limited to a 5-mile radius of Sensory Kids Therapy Services clinic.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - What’s the fastest method to get results with occupational or speech therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re looking for a faster way to get results for your child, therapy intensives might be a good option for you. Especially during the summer months. The intensive model involves more visits in a shorter period of time for improved carry-over from session to session and faster results. Ultimately, the exact number of visits depends on the needs of your child but we most commonly recommend 3 sessions per week, over 10 weeks. With parents included as a big part of the program, families have been delighted not only by progress in the clinic but what a difference they see at home. Following the intensive program, families frequently take a break from therapy to recharge and fully implement the program before adding anything new. Ask about our pre-pay discount for therapy intensives!</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - Why do families travel so far to come to Sensory Kids Iowa?</image:title>
<image:caption>The fact that families travel to come to our North Liberty clinic is a testament to our special blend of therapy services. It’s not just our advanced training and unique therapy space. It’s also the way we welcome and authentically connect with each family who walks through our doors. We know we’re doing something right when families continue to show up despite making the drive from places in Eastern Iowa including Ames, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Muscatine.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - My child doesn’t have a formal diagnosis, but I have concerns. Does it make sense to start therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>We believe that if you have concerns about your child, you should be seeking support sooner rather than later. Even without a formal diagnosis. The early years are so critical, there is no reason to wait for your child to fall farther behind before taking steps to help them. This is especially true in the context of increasing rates of autism and the research supporting the benefit of early intervention for positive long-term outcomes. While we don’t assume a child has a diagnosis like ADHD or autism, we also don’t want kids to miss out on making progress during these important early years just waiting for a diagnosis. While our therapists can not make a diagnosis, we can help point you in the direction of the right professional if needed. As a judgment-free zone, we promise to hear you out and provide a complete evaluation to understand your child’s skills in relation to peers, and then support you with resources for whatever next steps are needed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Speech Therapy - Everyone needs a way to communicate needs, wants, and likes in a way that feels comfortable and accessible.</image:title>
<image:caption>When communication isn’t happening smoothly, frustration quickly follows for everyone involved. More than just speaking clearly, your child’s time in speech therapy can improve their confidence, play skills, ability to make friends, and academic performance. What looks like play is actually setting your child up for life-long confidence, connection, and success.</image:caption>

<image:title>Speech Therapy - Expressive, Receptive, and Written Language</image:title>
<image:caption>Is it that your child doesn’t understand what others are saying? Or do they understand but can’t figure out how to respond? Our job is to figure out what underlying skills are making communication a challenge for your child. Then, we work on improving or adapting so your child is better able to interpret and express themselves through pictures, written, or spoken language.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speech Therapy - Auditory and Language Processing</image:title>
<image:caption>Some children have difficulty interpreting meaning from what they hear. This looks like not understanding words or being under-reactive or over-reactive to noise. We’re able to use a variety of techniques to improve your child’s ability to process auditory information.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speech Therapy - Augmentative and Alternative Communication</image:title>
<image:caption>When your child is unable to communicate needs or wants, it’s hard on everyone. Sometimes an alternative way of communication is the answer. Ranging from simple low-tech options such as picture boards to customized speech-generating technology, the right solution can make a world of difference for a child who can’t communicate through spoken words. We’re experts in evaluating whether your child needs a communication device and which one best fits their needs. We work with outside companies that not only supply the devices but assist with insurance approval. From there, we help you and your child learn how to use the communication device and make adjustments as needed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speech Therapy - Articulation of Speech Sounds</image:title>
<image:caption>Some children struggle to make one or more speech sounds. This leads to a range of struggles – from speech that simply sounds different to speech that's very difficult to understand. Clarity and the full range of speech sounds is a developmental process that occurs at different rates for different children. We’re able to assess and address articulation of speech sounds, taking into account developmental patterns, so you know if something really is a problem and when is the best time to address it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Speech Therapy - Stuttering and Fluency of Speech</image:title>
<image:caption>Up to 5% of kids go through a period of stuttering which can vary from situation to situation or go away on its own. Ongoing stuttering can result in social anxiety and decreased confidence, but education and early intervention can go a long way. We provide stuttering and fluency treatment therapy from a holistic approach. This includes information on stuttering, proactive strategies, and reducing the anxiety and stress that influence stuttering. And just a heads up, BlueCross does not cover speech therapy for stuttering. This doesn’t mean it’s not a valid treatment, it just means you’ll need to plan on self-pay to address this problem with your child.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speech Therapy - Voice Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>If your child has a high-pitched voice, baby voice, or raspy voice, speech therapy might be needed. Voice therapy is also helpful for children who speak too loudly or too softly. More than just sounding different, addressing vocal quality can improve classroom participation, social relationships, and long-term vocal strain. We address these challenges taking into account auditory processing, airway anatomy, and self-awareness.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speech Therapy - Social Skills</image:title>
<image:caption>Positive peer and family relationships are one of the most important areas we address in speech therapy. Social skills are where language, cognition, and relationships come together so your child can understand others, express themself, learn appropriate play, and many other important skills. We work on social skills in both individual and group sessions in a way that honors differences and helps each child better connect with others through play-based activities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speech Therapy - Interactive Metronome</image:title>
<image:caption>The interactive metronome is a research-supported program that uses sound and an interactive screen to exercise the brain. What you’ll see is your child wearing headphones and interacting with beats, rhythm, and sounds while playing interactive computer games. What you can’t see are the complex brain processes this program is addressing with each dynamic activity. With the interactive Metronome and our trained speech therapy staff, your child will work towards a range of speech and academic goals including word fluency, concentration, attention, timing, coordination, and auditory processing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speech Therapy - Initial Visit</image:title>
<image:caption>During the first visit, we complete the initial evaluation. This is when we assess the struggles your child is facing and develop a plan for moving forward. We usually start the initial evaluation in a private treatment room without distractions, then move to the fun of the big gym before wrapping up our first session. The initial evaluation includes a standardized assessment to get an idea of where your child is compared to milestones and similar peers. The assessment also includes discussing the concerns from caregivers and spending time playing together. Through play, we’re able to gather lots of useful information. Beyond just meeting milestones, we want to select a plan that is realistic and meaningful for your everyday life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Speech Therapy - Ongoing Sessions</image:title>
<image:caption>Don’t be surprised if therapy looks a lot like play. Underneath the fun of play, your child is doing all sorts of learning. There is always a reason behind what we’re doing, and we love sharing those with you during our parent debriefs. We have both private rooms and the sensory gym available for speech therapy sessions and use the spaces that work best for your child’s unique needs and goals. Parents are an important part of our work together. Some parents attend all of the sessions and some parents hang out in the waiting room. Even this depends on how your child learns best. Whether you sit in on sessions or not, we always leave time for a parent debrief at the end of each session to answer your questions and ensure you know what to do to help your child at home.</image:caption>

We take the time to understand your child’s problem eating from a whole-child perspective so they’ll make progress in a way that feels comfortable and fun. <image:title>Feeding Therapy - Initial Evaluation</image:title>
<image:caption>The initial evaluation is very thorough as we dive in to understand your goals and figure out the root causes of your child’s feeding challenges. We respect your child’s boundaries as we observe their response to foods and use other fun activities to understand their eating. It’s helpful if you come to the initial evaluation ready to discuss: Foods your child is currently eating. Foods your child won’t eat. Any items your child used to eat but no longer is eating. Past medical history that may play into eating habits Strategies you’ve tried at home</image:caption>

      <image:title>Feeding Therapy - Therapy Sessions</image:title>
<image:caption>Ongoing therapy sessions build feeding skills at your child’s pace. In some cases, food exploration simply looks like making a mess to get comfortable with food textures before ever needing to take a bite. For continuity of care, you’ll typically be working with one therapist throughout your journey, although sometimes changes are made to match your needs to the therapist with the right skill set. Length of treatment varies from child to child, but in some cases, it can take months to build new eating skills in a way that’s respectful and fun. That’s ok, we’re here for you and your child – however long it takes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Feeding Therapy - Meals at Home</image:title>
<image:caption>Truth is, the key to your child’s progress is empowering you – the caregiver – with tools for skills-building during all the mealtimes between sessions. You can do this! And we’re here with all the support and guidance you need. A therapy meal home program will be implemented based on what is being done during food school.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Infant Feeding Therapy - Initial Evaluation</image:title>
<image:caption>The initial evaluation is very thorough as we dive in to understand your goals and figure out the root causes of your baby’s feeding challenges. If your baby is bottle fed the therapist will feed your baby with the tools you provide to assess what a typical feeding may look like. A new tool may also be trialed during the evaluation based on your baby’s performance. If your baby is breastfed you will be observed during a feeding to assess latch and oral motor function. Feedback about positioning or latch techniques may be provided along with information regarding milk transfer. If your child is having difficulties transitioning to solids different you will be observed feeding your child like you do at home in our specialized feeding highchair. Sensory tools may be used to identify any sensory responses to feeding. An oral motor examination utilizing the Beckman Oral Motor Approach will be completed to look for any oral motor deficits that may be playing a role in difficult feedings. If deficits are identified you may be taught some oral motor exercises to complete at home prior to the next session. It’s helpful if you come to the initial evaluation ready to discuss: Birth/medical history Concerns with breast/bottle feeding Other professionals involved in journey Strategies you’ve tried at home Goals for feeding your baby</image:caption>

      <image:title>Infant Feeding Therapy - Therapy Sessions</image:title>
<image:caption>Therapy sessions are typically 30-60 minutes depending on the time needed to feed your infant. You’ll be working with our specialized speech therapist in a private sensory friendly treatment room. Sessions will likely consist of oral motor therapy and demonstration of exercises to complete work at home, breast or bottle feedings, trialing tools for increased function and troubleshooting additional difficulties that may arise. Duration of therapy varies from child to child. If your child is being seen following a tongue or lip tie revision it may only be necessary to complete 3-4 sessions but it may take weeks or months to address more complex feeding difficulties.</image:caption>
